Inside-Outside Drill

Age Group: Suitable for Young Children
Practice Area: 3-4 meters
Ball Size: 3 or 4

Objective:
The Inside-Outside drill is designed to enhance close ball control, agility, and the ability to change direction quickly. This drill teaches players to effectively use both the inside and outside of their foot for maneuvering the ball.

Instructions:

  1. Setup: Define a 3-4 meter area for the drill.
  2. Starting Position: Stand with the ball at your feet.
  3. Execution: Start by using only one foot for the drill. Touch the ball with the inside of this foot, moving it to the side. Then, switch to the outside of the same foot, moving the ball across to the opposite side. Maintain a left-to-right movement pattern with the ball. After completing the designated repetitions and sets with one foot, switch to the other foot and repeat the drill. This approach ensures that both feet get equal training in controlling and maneuvering the ball.
  4. Footwork: Pay attention to your plant foot (the foot not touching the ball). When using the outside of your foot, place the plant foot wide for stability. When using the inside of your foot, bring the plant foot closer to the ball for precise control.
  5. Rhythm and Control: Focus on smooth transitions between the inside and outside touches. Keep the ball close to your feet and maintain a controlled, rhythmic movement.

Repetitions and Sets:
Perform 30 repetitions of the inside-outside movement. Aim for 5 sets with brief rests in between.

Equipment Needed:

  • A soccer ball (size 3 or 4).
  • A flat, open space, either indoors or outdoors.

Safety Tips:

  • Ensure the practice area is free of any potential hazards.
  • Encourage children to wear appropriate sports footwear for better grip and safety.

Progress Tracking:
Parents should observe the smoothness of the transitions and the control of the ball. As the child practices, their agility and ability to change directions quickly should improve.

Challenge:
As the child becomes more adept at the drill, encourage them to increase the speed while maintaining control of the ball.

Fun Tip:
Turn this drill into a timed challenge. See how many inside-outside touches the child can perform in a set time frame, gradually reducing the time for the same number of touches.
